Essential prerequisites
What you need to apply
You must meet all six requirements below. Please read them carefully before you apply.
Age
Generally between 18 and 35 years old. Some programmes may extend this slightly.
South African ID
You must be a South African citizen with a valid green bar-coded ID book or a new South African ID card.
Matric Certificate
A National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) is typically a non-negotiable requirement. It shows foundational literacy and numeracy.
Clean Criminal Record
A comprehensive background check is conducted. Any criminal record will disqualify an applicant, because of the sensitive nature of security work.
Physical Fitness
Security work can be physically demanding and may involve:
- Long hours on your feet
- Patrols
- Physically demanding situations where necessary
A medical fitness assessment may form part of the selection process.
Communication Skills
Fluency in English — reading, writing and speaking — is essential for:
- Reporting
- Interacting with the public
- Following instructions
Knowledge of other official South African languages is an advantage.
Meeting the requirements does not guarantee a place
Every application is screened, and shortlisted candidates go through vetting, interviews and PSIRA verification before anyone is selected. Places on the programme are limited.
